KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will only decide on Port Dickson by-election after its political bureau meeting in 10 days.
Its secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa said to date, the party has yet to make any decision or take a stand on possible fielding of a candidate to contest in the by-election.
The bureau meet is scheduled to take place on Sept 24.
Annuar said following the meeting, Barisan Nasional would hold its meeting on the matter.
“As it is, whatever statements or views made by BN leaders or Umno's on the by-election are considered personal opinions. Everyone is entitled to it and not barred from talking.
“Official statement can only be issued by the respective party headquarters or presidents at a time deemed suitable,” he added.
He said this in response to Umno’s Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz's plan to campaign for PKR incoming president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the by-election.
Anwar had announced that he would be contesting the seat following Datuk Danyal Balagopal Abdullah’s resignation as MP on Wednesday.
Nazri said the reason behind his campaign effort was because he believed it would be beneficial for Umno.
He also dismissed party deputy president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan's comment that Umno would give Anwar a fight in the by-election, saying that it was not the party's decision.
The former tourism and culture minister also said that Mohamad was “not an MP and thus, does not know what we MPs are planning.”
Another Umno leader, Tan Sri Shahidan Kassim also said he supported Anwar as the next prime minister as opposed to other Pakatan Harapan leaders.
“If you don’t want Anwar then there will be Datuk Seri Mukhriz (Mahathir), Datuk Seri Azmin (Ali) or someone else from PH who will be PM after Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"At least with Anwar, we know him.” Shahidan was quoted as saying today.
