Govt urged to deal with flash flood at Km15

MOTORISTS using the Pasir Gudang highway are unhappy with the flash floods which occur weekly near the Petronas petrol station at Kilometre 15.
 |
| Many motorists have labelled this road as the ‘killer stretch’. |
In a recent incident, an oil tanker driver nearly lost control of the vehicle when he tried to avoid a stretch which was flooded.
The driver, Syed Hassan Syed Alwi, 37, said that part of the highway had been dubbed the "killer stretch" by lorry drivers.
He believes that the flash flood was caused by debris in the silt traps which was blocking the flow of water in the drains.
"There was a terrible traffic jam because of the flood which occurred after an hour-long downpour," he said.
He added that the area was accident-prone and urged the Public Works Department to inspect it so that they would know what motorists were going through daily, especially now during the rainy season.
Trader Abdul Rahim Paiman, 49, echoed Hassan's sentiment and called on the authorities to do something fast.
A spokesman for Johor Baru City Council's traffic unit, who declined to be named, said the highway was the responsibility of Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan Bhd and the Public Works Department.
He said he would liaise with the relevant parties about the situation.
