The medical camp was held in conjunction with the First Malaysia International Traditional Medicine Congress organised by the Chung Hua Traditional Chinese Medicine Study and Research Society of Malaysia in Kuching recently.
Led by association chairman Ng Chiang Foo, the members of the contingent spent their free time extending medical treatment to those with muscle, bone and joint problems at the congress venue at Liwah Hotel.
Ng said it was a privilege for the association to be able to offer the service to East Malaysians.
"Our purpose is to introduce the Chinese way of healing to everybody and attend to the needs of the sick from the lower income group," he said.
"Although the number of patients is small, we hope this initiative will help to generate interest and inculcate awareness of Chinese medicines and healing."
Ng said the contingent's members included camp commander Ong Yi Xin and adviser Prof Soo Sheng Ren.
This is the first time the association has taken the initiative to treat patients free of charge in East Malaysia.
It has organised 54 free medical camps in the peninsula in the past five years.
Beside free medical treatment, the two-day congress also featured exhibitions which showcased traditional medicinal products, health equipment and herbs.
The congress was opened by Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan. -- By Sim Bak Heng
